Door openings and dimensions are especially important when installing or replacing an interior door. When replacing an existing door with a pre-hung door, select a door that has the same dimensions as the existing one.
Standard widths for interior doors are 24, 28, 30, 32 and 36 inches, while the height must be a minimum of 80 inches. For a slab door, measure the width, height and thickness of the door. For a pre-hung door, measure the width and height of the slab, the rough opening (space between the studs with no door installed), and the thickness of the jamb.
Barn doors are a fresh way to separate rooms, while providing an artisan flair to any space. Some barn doors glide along an upper rail, and others have a bottom track to prevent the door from swinging. Barn doors range from rustic to polished and come prefinished or unfinished in a variety of styles.
A pocket door is a sliding door that tucks into the wall and hides from view when opened. It's a great door when space is at a premium, and there's no room for the swing arc of a door. Depending on the entry width, single or double doors can be used.
French doors have multiple lites (panes of glass) throughout the length of the door that offer minimal privacy, while allowing light to filter in from adjoining rooms. They're typically situated in a side-by-side pair, with each door opening away from the other. They're a classic style and bring a touch of elegance to any space.
Bifold doors are hinged with symmetrical door panels that fold outward and to the side as a pair when opened. Many bifold doors are louvered, allowing for better air circulation than traditional doors. Bifold doors don't swing and take up less space than a hinged door, making them a great choice for closets, laundry rooms, utility rooms or room dividers.
Saloon/cafe doors define your space in a whimsical way without closing off the area. These are available in an array of design styles and sizes, including full-length, and include hardware for installation.
Unfinished doors are a blank slate and require more work than prefinished doors. They're presanded but not stained or painted. Interior doors are available in a variety of styles, giving you the option of enhancing every room in your home.
Molded composite is an affordable, manufactured product made with a wood-based compound. It's engineered to have the look and feel of real wood. Maintenance on composite doors is painless; they won't fade over time and never need painting.
Hollow core doors are lightweight, inexpensive, easy to install and a popular choice for many homeowners. Their versatility makes them ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms and closets; however, they don't offer high-quality sound blocking and have little fire resistance.
Cutting hollow core doors can be tricky because they aren't truly hollow. Inside is a foam or cardboard core. Measure the amount to trim, align and use a utility knife to score with a straight edge. Clamp a straight edge cutting guide to the door, and cover the score with masking tape all the way around the door to help prevent chipping. Cut with a power saw.
Solid core doors are sturdier, heavier and offer better soundproofing than hollow core. They're better insulated, offer the look, feel and durability of solid wood without the cost and provide good fire resistance.
Panel doors, a popular and decorative choice, feature stiles (vertical frame elements) and rails (horizontal frame elements) with flat panels placed between them. Six-panel doors are classic, but two- and three-panel doors are also available.
Doors offer privacy and a way to divide the floor plan of your home, and they can also be an important design element. On Lowes.com, you can explore popular types of interior doors and find ways to separate rooms in style.
If you want a traditional interior door that swings from hinges on one side, you can choose between a slab door or prehung doors. A slab, which is simply the door itself, comes without hinges, other hardware or a frame. Prehung interior doors come already fitted with hinges and with a hole predrilled in preparation for a handle. Some prehung doors may come with a frame or door casing.
Choose from a variety of materials, including wood and glass. For a truly vintage or a distressed look, consider an interior barn door made from reclaimed wood. For a more modern style, look for glass interior doors.
French doors are a classic design for both interior and exterior use. You typically see French doors as a set of double doors that feature glass panels framed by wood. They often also have a wooden grill that gives the glass panel the look of small windowpanes. Interior French doors are a great choice if you want to separate two spaces but still want them to feel connected, as the glass will allow you to see into the next room.
Interior doors help ensure privacy, reduce noise and can also hide rooms or areas that are untidy. Interior doors come in a wide variety of styles, which makes it easy to match or complement an existing trim and finish in your home's decor.
Standard interior doors are available in prehung and slab styles. Prehung doors install easily as they include the jamb and frame, providing a uniform appearance. Slab doors are more economical as they can be mounted using the existing jamb and trim.
If privacy is not an issue, an interior door may not need a lock. However, bedroom and bathroom doors usually need privacy locks. These locks have a locking button on the knob that's inside the bedroom or bathroom. To prevent someone from being locked in the room, the locking button can easily be picked open with a tiny screwdriver or paper clip.

Hollow-core flush doors, installed in millions of homes for the past 50 years, are lightweight, low-cost versions of the flush door. These have an inner softwood frame surrounding cardboard honeycomb cores, and are faced with thin wood veneers. They are damaged relatively easily and allow considerable sound transfer.
You can also buy molded fiber composite doors. These are extremely durable and dimensionally stable. And some are designed to meet specific needs. For example, the composite door shown below is made to maximize sound control.
Interior doors are sold pre-hung in frames or as doors only, called blanks or slabs. The latter type are for hanging in existing door frames or for mounting in a situation where the interior carpenter is up for the challenge of building the entire jamb set. They are sold without hinges, knobs, or locksets, but they may be ordered with a hole pre-bored for the lockset.
Pre-hung doors are the preferred choice in most situations because of the labor they save. The door comes mounted to a jamb set, with hinges mortised into the edges. When ordering this type, you specify the surface-to-surface thickness of the wall and the size and location of the holes for the lockset.
There are several types of interior doors, distinguished by the way they operate. Regardless of the type of doors, the frames are built basically the same, with the exception of pocket doors (see below). The frame consists of jambs, a casing, stops, a sill, and a threshold. The jambs form the sides and head of the frame, and the casing is support for the jambs. The stops are wood strips against which the door fits when closed.
Hinged doors are the standard in every home. Conventional hinged doors may be either right or left handed. A door that opens toward you and has the door knob on the right is right handed. A door hinged on the opposite side is left handed.

We are leaning towards solid core for our interior doors and like the santa fe 2 panel design( -WEN-Santa-Fe-Solid-Core-2-Panel-Round-Top-Plank-Slab-Interior-Door-Common-30-in-x-80-in-Actual-30-in-x-80-in/1000079495).
Can you please recommend a good online source to order them from If we had the money we would go for solid interior doors and I know you get what you pay for but if you have experiences ordering your interior doors online, please share it with me.
Definitely look into local millwork shops and such. We were able to get semi custom 3 panel solid oak doors (8' tall) in custom widths (one is 42\" wide), some for barn door sliders, etc.. all for the \"big box store\" prices or less. It does take a bit more planning to get the order prefect, but having nice doors that aren't the same \"off the shelf\" as everyone else is worth it in the end (at least to us).
We got all of ours from Home Depot. I searched and searched locally and various online sources, but no one came close to the HD prices. We didn't need anything special....just solid core 2 panel shaker doors, so nothing custom other than they were mostly 8' tall doors which were special order. 59ce067264
