If you need to install the new version of OS X Server, you will have to shutdown the server then restart it later. If you have already booted the server and are logging in, you will be prompted to upgrade to macOS Sierra. The upgrade process will cause the server to become unresponsive until the upgrade completes. Are you sure you want to continue?

The upgrade process will require that you reboot the server, which may cause the server to become unresponsive. When the server reboots, it will see the new hardware and reinstall all of the application software needed on this new server. If you are using a single-user server, this will cause the server to be unavailable to all users for a short period of time. You can continue the upgrade by selecting Cancel. If you need to reboot your server during the upgrade, you can do so now and continue later. You may want to make sure that your server's battery is fully charged before rebooting.

If you require assistance during the upgrade, use the following information to re-enable remote access to your server. First, please ensure that your server's boot volume is configured to automatically mount the hard drive. If this is not set, you can set it with the mount command and set root=/dev/sda (or whatever your boot volume is) in your kernel line. Next, ensure that your server's hostname is set to something like server.example.com.

Notes:

Currently, we are unable to use disable command for server version of macOS.

The server version of macOS will keep all users logged in.

Launchd daemon has already been disabled by our Apple engineers.

However, this is a bit different from the Apple document, because it uses the launchd daemon to disable the server. We will have a brief discussion on the difference of disable and unload here.
