Based on the book Mulholland Drive by Bret Easton Ellis, the film is directed by David Lynch from a screenplay he wrote with Roberta LaFontaine and William Butler.
where h is the length of the air-column inside the instrument, r0 is the reed tension and k is a proportionality constant. The constant k is of cousedependent on the reed used. The constant r0 depends on the exact shape of the bore, and r0 is in general only weakly dependent on the length h. A typical value for r0is 0.2 N/cm. K is approximately 2 for the most common reeds used in reed woodwindinstruments (e.g. in oboes, clarinets and saxophones). The constant kis, therefore, typically a factor of 2.5.
In order to reduce air leakage between the instrument bore and the resonating cavity of the instrument, a commonpractice is to place a sheet of metal (e.g. the faceplate of an oboe) over the reed. This assembly then acts as a part ofthe instrument. The reed is then 'hidden', so that the instrument looks as if it is of ordinary design. Mostreed woodwinds have a good sound and have been used in the so-called 'golden age' of the solo oboe around the beginningof the 20th century. However, because of the importance of exact intonation in the classical tradition, the instrument qualitywas often less than optimal. Only a few reed woodwinds can nowadays produce a good sound and can be used in a classicalcontext, e.g., the reed woodwinds of the oboe, clarinet and bassoon. 827ec27edc
