We know that Herodias had a deep seated hatred for John, and that this was a carefully planned act done as a way of controlling her husband, and to see how far he would go. Herod's previous behavior had caused her to fear for her life. She had arranged the attempt to kill him in Egypt, and after his return in Judea, she again tried to have him murdered. Herod's fear of her power, and his concern over the popularity of John, also led him to consent to this action. He wanted to see how far he could go in order to eliminate the Baptist.

Matthew's description of John's beheading is a little different from Mark's, but the same overall picture is given. Matthew 12:13-17 records that John's head was cut off and given to the high priest. Mark 6:17 says that John's head was cut off. The difference is in Mark's account that the head of John was brought to the ruler of the synagogue, and (Mark 6:21-22) that some of the Jews buried John's head in Jerusalem. The Jewish ritual for burying the head of a malefactor was to be done in a tomb or a rock (see L.B.F. Spitz, A Jewish Priest in Roman Palestine, p. 33).
