Upon the film's initial limited release in the U.S, it was expected to become the "breakout indie hit of the summer".[28] By September 8, the film had taken in $1.9 million from 318 screens in the United Kingdom. This was regarded as a successful five-day opening by Fox Searchlight, earning around half as much as the science-fiction blockbuster District 9, which took in $3.5 million.[29]The film ended up grossing $32.4 million in the United States and Canada and $60.7 million worldwide.[1]

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four stars out of four, describing the film as "a delightful comedy, alive with invention". He particularly praised the strong performances of Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel and summarized his review by adding, "Here is a rare movie that begins by telling us how it will end and is about how the hero has no idea why".[32] Premiere also awarded the film four stars out of four, stating "Much like the actual summer (the season, not the character), we never wanted it to end".[33]Michael Ordoña of the Los Angeles Times gave a positive review. He wrote, "500 Days of Summer is something seldom seen: an original romantic comedy. It bristles with energy, emotion and intellect, as it flits about the dizzying highs and weeping-karaoke lows of a passionate entanglement".[34]Dana Stevens of Slate also praised the film and described it as "a keeper. It's fun both to watch and to talk about afterward, and it possesses the elusive rom-com sine qua non: two equally appealing leads who bounce wonderfully off each other".[35]

Coco Martin is one of the celebrities in the Philippines that earned his break through the indie scene. Coco or born as Rodel Nacianceno was dubbed as "The King of Philippine Independent Films." Coco was born on November 1, 1981 in Manila, Philippines. He is living with his grandmother whom he considers as his second mother. He has five siblings in total both from his biological parents. The indie films Daybreak (2008) and Jay (2008) earned him his first Gawad Urian for Best Supporting Actor. Coco created another masterpiece this time with international award winning director, Brillante Mendoza. The film was entitled Kinatay (2009) and it was applauded by international audiences.His mainstream career started in ABS-CBN's talent agency, Star Magic. In 2001, he made his first cameo appearance in the film titled Luv Text (2001). He ventured in other networks in 2007 but after a year he came back home to his Kapamilyas. This granted him well deserved nominations from a lot of award giving bodies such as KBP Golden Dove Awards and Star Awards for TV to name some.He is known for starring as lead, Daniel Guidotti, in ABS-CBN's top rated primetime drama show Walang hanggan (2012) for which he worked with his co-star Julia Montes in the film A Moment in Time (2013). In 2013, he is also best known for starring as the title character in the fantasy action drama series Juan Dela Cruz (2013).In 2014, he starred in the films Maybe This Time (2014) alongside Sarah Geronimo and Feng Shui 2 (2014) alongside Kris Aquino. In 2015, he starred in the romantic comedy You're My Boss (2015) alongside Toni Gonzaga and the action comedy Beauty and the Bestie (2015) alongside Vice Ganda. He continues his work as a leading actor in both film and television.

With Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently calling his time on (500) Days of Summer a "special" and "fun" experience (via Vanity Fair), it appears that the fans aren't the only ones who adore the movie. (500) Days of Summer has always been a unique indie film for rom-com and film lovers alike due to how it subverted fans' expectations and didn't play into outdated tropes.
