In the 17th century, a bandit named Harmonica (Bronson) is hired by the corrupt Clanton gang to rob a train carrying $150,000. He is told by Slim (Zanuck) to kill Clanton and his gang and that afterwards the money will be delivered to him.In his quest, Harmonica runs into a former acquaintance, a teenager named Goodnight (Nash), who now possesses a gambling problem. Together, they form an uneasy partnership.Harmonica soon learns that the Cowlitz Kid (Claude Akins) is in town and is planning on killing Slim and his gang. He then sets out to stop the Kid.Harmonica and Goodnight stop the Kid from killing Slim, who takes a bullet in the leg. Slim then hires a small Mexican town to fight against the Kid's gang. The town is won and Slim takes over the town, a process which results in the gang members being executed.Finally, a disgusted Slim learns that his father John Clanton (Dean Martin) is the real head of the Cowlitz gang and that his brother Billy (Lupino) was responsible for the killing of Slim's gang members. Billy tries to kill Slim.Slim then realizes what a terrible person he has been and becomes a reformed and repentant man, promising to pay back the money.During the last shootout with the Cowlitz gang, Slim is killed, but not by the Kid.Harmonica leaves town with the money, taking Goodnight with him. Goodnight assures him that he has decided to turn his life around as well.In the end, Harmonica and Goodnight make it to a settlement in Mexico, where they live the rest of their lives. Goodnight's gambling problem is solved by a man named Pablo (co-written by Leone).The movie is a landmark in that it represents a dramatic change in Leone's direction. It is the first of three films where Leone adopts a more serious tone. The previous Westerns of the Dollars trilogy featured a cast of characters who are still loosely defined. They all have distinct traits, but it is not always clearly defined who does what and who is to be considered the protagonist. Everybody gets to do their bit and they all deserve good reviews. The main characters in the Dollars films are all individuals who are trying to do the right thing for themselves, but who often fail. 827ec27edc
