Julie Tharp explains how his mother's rape puts Joe in a difficult situation, as he is beginning to view women such as Sonja as sexual objects, but bares witness to his mother's misery from the hands of male sexual aggression.[9] Joe is surrounded by male role models who exhibit different forms of masculinity, with some exhibiting sexual abuse towards women and others exemplifying leadership and restraint such as his father, Bazil.[9] When Joe blackmails Sonja, she confronts Joe claiming he is no better than the other men she deals with.[1] Joe rejected Whitey's abusive treatment of Sonja when he quit his gas station job, and as Tharp outlines, this incident forces Joe to consider a toxic cycle of misogyny.[9] Joe's masculinity also comes into effect when he plans to kill Linden by preparing his plan of drawing him out on the golf course and murdering him for abusing his mother.[9]

The Round House explores the paradox of men's attitude toward women, particularly Native American women. The round house in the book is meant to be a physical reminder of what this attitude should be: women are sacred and should be treated with respect and honor. This ideal is exemplified in the marriage of Joe's parents, Bazil and Geraldine, and in an immature but sincere way in the relationship between Cappy and Zelia, who feel their love was sent from God.

Tragically, this ideal is contradicted in almost every other relationship in the book. Geraldine is raped and beaten by Linden Lark. Mayla is sexually exploited by the governor and sent away to raise her child, only to be abducted and murdered. Joe's aunt Sonja suffers abuse at the hands of her former manager and then Whitey, who has promised to take care of her. Even Mooshum and Joe objectify her. Through these characters and the events surrounding them, author Louise Erdrich drives home the notion that the abuse of Native American woman is epidemic. One in three become the victim of rape at some point in their lifetime and the overwhelming number of rapists are non-Native. Geraldine's rape by a white man, near the round house, mobilizes this theme from the opening pages of the novel through the last chapter of the book.
