When you add a new anchor point, it is actually added to the previous point in your path. For example, if you were to add an anchor point to the center of a path, the previous anchor pointis moved to the left of the newly created anchor point. You can delete either an anchor point or all of them using the Delete Anchor Point tool.

The Push/Pull option in Illustrator CS4 CC lets you drag a selection across a file and place it at a specific position. But this option is not available for selected paths. You can, however, use the Shift/Control key to move the selected path directly from one anchor point to another.
